COSMOS Validator Sentry Nodes

Problem Statement:

Sentry nodes are an important component of HA COSMOS validator infrastructure that serve to improve security and DDoS resistance, being generally advised as a best practice of validator infrastructure designs. The sentinel node model is also currently being considered for other multi-chain dPoS platforms such as the Polkadot network.

Presently AWS is the standard recommended platform to host sentry node infrastructure.

What is the problem you will solve?

In our opinion the Akash network itself is a much more apt platform to operate sentinel nodes on due to it’s flexibility, ease of deployment, and affordability (which could help serve to reduce the ToC of large validator deployments, which are already fairly expensive infrastructure deployments to operate).

Goals: What are you aiming to accomplish?

Developing a deployment template for COSMOS Validator sentry nodes.
Additionally develop a set of ansible playbooks to automate deployment, management, and scaling.

Impact: What impact will this project have?

Improve and streamline the deployment and operation of sentry node operations to secure production COSMOS Validator deployments, which could be easily adapted to other sentry node models being developed on other multi-chain platforms. As mentioned this would also reduce the the TCO of Validator operations, improving their overall profitability.

Budget: How much funding will this require?

Roughly $500 would helpful in to cover the reservation resources for dev and testing instances. Any additional funding provided to compensate us for the time invested in this project would be greatly appreciated.

Timeline: What is the timeline for accomplishing this task?

It is not expected that this would take any overly considerable amount of development hours. Due to the limited available time I / our organization has at the present moment due to numerous high-profile projects and initiatives currently in progress time to delivery would likely be 30-60 days.

Team: Are you looking for additional team members?

We have been participating in the Althea blockchain validator testnet, so we have a line of communication open to certain amount of other testers and developers involved in this general area, but we always welcome additional team member participation and/or contributions.

Reporting: How will you report your progress to the community?

Via our github account, the Akash and Althea discord communities, and other communication platforms our organization regularly utilizes (blogging, etc.).


As the president, co-founder, and one of the head engineers of the non-profit organization, the Pacific NW Rural Broadband Alliance, which is a mission driven organization working directly with rural communities to build Althea-based distributed mesh networks to provide broadband service to under-served and un-connected areas, as well as an early adopter Althea network operator, we are token holders that plan on operating validators to support the Althea blockchain developed on the COSMOS platform.

Furthermore we are an organization that is highly interested in the development of distributed architecture and other web3.0 technologies, and we have a vested interest in seeing projects that utilize the COSMOS blockchain continue to improve and thrive.

That’s a great list of node deployments, but different from sentinels. Though those deployments could make for a good template as a place to start from.
